The Game Library Project

December 31, 2022 - Reading time: 4 minutes - Category: game library project

I have, to put it simply, too many games. Nearly 5500 across multiple platforms. It sounds insane - and it is - but it's not so crazy when you look at it with a little perspective. I've been gaming for more than 20 years. I've had a Steam account for close to 15 of those. I keep up with deals, I claim every free game I can. Nearly 1000 of these games were free or "free", given out by Epic, GOG, or through Amazon Prime, Ubisoft, or EA. Nearly 2000 of them are from Itch.io - claimed through various charity mega-bundles. The remaining 2000 or so are on Steam, and the vast majority of those are from hundreds of bundles from Humble, Fanatical, and the like over the years. Most of my Playstation games are from the free monthly Playstation Plus giveaways.

That said, I've obviously only played a tiny fraction of these games. Many are, I'm sure, not worth playing at all. Some will demand hundreds of hours. My goal is to give every single one* of these games a "fair shake". I'll boot them up, get a grasp of the mechanics and themes of the game, and do a small writeup of my thoughts. If I'm enjoying myself I'll keep playing. If not, I'll move on. My goal with this project is twofold:

  1. I want to stop buying games that look interesting and then never play them (wasting money)
  2. I want to play more games in general, broaden my tastes, and experience the games I already own

This is a massive project. It will take years, even if I only give every game a few minutes. That's fine; I'm not going anywhere. Embedded below is a living document of my game library. The default tab will show all the games I've already played, with a link to my thoughts on them and the date(s) I played them. Games highlighted in green are those I've completed. At the bottom of the sheet, use the other tabs to see my library. I'll be playing these games in a mostly random order, but if I have a game I want to play badly I'll jump it to the top.

Each post will be short, just a paragraph or two. I'll end each post with a verdict:

  • Uninstall - stop playing, the game isn't worth any more time
  • Maybe Revisit - The game didn't grab me at the moment, but I might revisit in the future
  • Play Later - Keep the game in mind and add to the list to continue playing, but other games take priority
  • Keep Playing - The game was awesome and is a priority; keep playing ASAP
  • Finished - The game was so short I finished it in my brief trial period, or I've completed it in the past

I'll also use categories like "Timewaster" or "Endless" for games that don't fit neatly into the above, like endless and super casual games that can't really be finished.

* For sports games and other yearly releases where nothing much changes, I'll just be playing the latest year I own. For games that have multiple editions, Gold or Deluxe editions or the like, I'll be playing the most complete newest version I have. For games that are still fresh in my mind, I won't necessarily be replaying them. In these cases, I'll list the date I last played or completed the game.

My biggest project is my Game Library Project. I have a ton of games collected throughout the years, and have barely played any of them. Check out the linked post to learn more about the project, and click here to be taken to the category page where you can see all my posts for the project.
