I've played almost all the Pokemon games over the years, but one thing I've never really done is catch very many Pokemon. I usually go in with a team in mind, catch that team, and then maybe catch a few others along with the legendaries. Lately I've been in a big Pokemon mood, and I've got it in my head to try a Living Dex challenge.
A Living Dex means having every available Pokemon stored in Pokemon Home on the Switch. Between the 3DS and Switch games, almost every single Pokemon is available in some form. With the 3DS games, you can transfer the Pokemon form the game to an app called Pokemon Bank, and then from Pokemon Bank to Pokemon Home on the Switch, which can hold thousands of Pokemon. I'll be trying to catch the Pokemon in a game set in the region it first appears, as much is realistic.
This should get me the vast majority of available Pokemon. If a Pokemon is too hard or annoying to catch in one game, I'll substitute another game where it is more readily available. This is for fun, not to torture myself. I probably won't play the opposite version for most of these, as it doesn't seem very fun to play through an entire new game just to get a few version exclusive Pokemon when they are likely available in one of the Switch games. ZA does not yet have Pokemon Home support but likely will by time I make it down that far the list.
It is very difficult to transfer Pokemon from the old games. I'll be using a workflow for this that some may not count as legit, but I don't care. For the pre-Switch games, I'll be playing in an emulator, then using a tool called PKHeX to transfer my Pokemon from the older games into a 3DS save, then importing that save into my actual 2DS, uploading to Pokemon Bank, and then transferring to Home. The Pokemon will be caught legitimately, I just do not have the hardware to transfer them with authentic devices.
