In our never-ending search for more co-op games to check out, my brother and I came across Wildlands. I watched a couple videos, and the freeform sandbox gameplay looked pretty fun, so we gave it a shot.
The game features a large open world where you play as a squad of special forces operatives, gathering intel and taking out gang members. It's got a ton of that Ubisoft feel, with a gigantic map and mission types that get used over and over, but it's competent and fun. There are a ton of weapons and vehicles, and lots of ways to approach each mission. In the few missions we played there were clear ways to either charge right in guns blazing or to take a stealthy approach. I think they call this "emergent gameplay" and it was a good time.
You can definitely tell this is a PS4 game even playing on a PS5. The load times are obnoxious, and while the graphics are good there's a ton of motion blur that can't be turned off. It's also seemingly running at 30fps and the controls, especially driving, are a bit clunky.
I'm not sure if we'll continue this one or play a ton of it. We'll likely finish Dead Island 2 first as I think we're both enjoying that one more. But I'm not counting this one out yet, and I think it'll be fun to hop in and do some missions every now and again.
Verdict: Keep Playing (Multiplayer)
