Kirby and the Forgotten Land review

I've beaten Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and my thoughts echo those I had a week ago in my first impressions post. Forgotten Land is a nice evolution for Kirby while keeping the core gameplay the same. It's a fun, charming, and accessible game that should be a nice stepping stone for future entries in the series.Kirby games generally follow a theme. They're mostly a series of linear levels divided into worlds based around an overarching design. Beach world, Desert world, Ruined factory world, and so on. Forgotten Land follows this trend, though the switch to 3D levels freshens it up and allows for some more unique designs within levels.

Like all Kirby games, the main story of FL isn't difficult at all. Even on "Wild Mode", the harder difficulty, you won't have any trouble with the main story if you've been upgrading your abilities at all. I upgraded the Hammer and Fire abilities to level 3, and they trivialized the last few boss levels. If you want a challenge, you'll have to go for beating target times in challenge levels and post-game content.

The game runs pretty well (for a Switch game) at a mostly-locked 30fps. There are a few times per level when the framerate went down to 15-20fps for a few seconds while assets loaded or a lot of particles were onscreen. Switch users are used to this kind of thing, and it's disappointing because while Forgotten Land looks nice and makes the most of the art style they went for, it doesn't seem like the type of game that should have slowdown.

After playing Return to Dreamland Deluxe and Superstar Ultra earlier this year and now Forgotten Land, I admittedly have a bit of Kirby fatigue. Kirby is like eating a bowl of ice cream: always delicious, but eventually you just get a little tired of it. I want to eventually play Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot on the 3DS, but those are going on the backburner for a while.
