Old World

October 5, 2025 - Reading time: 2 minutes - Category: game library project

Old World is a strategy/4X game created by a studio headed by a former Civilization dev, and the bones of Civ are definitely present here. It's also got a lot more character interaction than Civ, there's some Crusader Kings influence is here too.

I enjoyed Civ 5 and 6, but never played 7 after it didn't review very well. I'm always on the lookout for similar games, and Old World was dirt cheap on sale so I picked it up. I've played most of the tutorial and I like what I've played so far. Anyone who has played a recent Civ game will feel at home, and if you've ever touched a Crusader Kings game, you'll pick up on the character mechanics quickly. The basic gameplay is pretty close to Civ, with you founding cities and then using workers to build improvements, with several resources to manage and a few different victory conditions.

I've got no real complaints so far. One minor gripe is that when you try to move a unit further than they can move in one turn, they don't automatically continue moving on the next turn. The UI is also a little amateurish, it's not very stylish and feels a little "default". Again, minor gripes.

This game is well on its way to being my new sandbox strategy of choice. There's a bunch of DLC, but reviews say they aren't essential. I may pick them up when I have a better grasp of the game.

Verdict: Endless
