skate. is a reboot of the classic PS3 era skateboarding series that was a more realistic answer to Tony Hawk's arcade style. It's been rebooted here as a free to play game, for better or worse.
I was never a huge skateboarding guy. I played a few Tony Hawk's and the first 2 Skate games, but never really got into them and never skated in real life. I wasn't terribly interested in this one because of that, but for free, why not give it a try. It plays fine. The skating is good, and doing tricks is pretty easy and intuitive. The art style is a little offputting; they leaned hard into the Fortnite-ish cartoony style, which, while functional, is a little bland. Something with a little more style would've been welcome.
Most of the complaints around this game are going to focus on the monetization. From what I can tell, it's all cosmetic stuff. While probably predatory, I've never been one to be sucked into buying skins, so I'm not bothered. I'll just play the content for free and have my guy walk around as a lame default skin.
Not sure how much time I'll truly put into this, put so far it's a fun timewaster.
Verdict: Timewaster
