A Prayer for the Crown-Shy review

May 13, 2025 - Reading time: ~1 minute - Category: game library project

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy is the latest in Becky Chambers feel-good low states sci-fi novellas. This one continues the journeys of Dex and Mosscap, asking questions about what humans really need and what drives them in a post-scarcity world.

This type of sci-fi isn't usually for me. I generally prefer more plot-driven stuff, but I do like Becky Chambers' work. The questions asked are poignant and stick with you, and the books don't feel pretentious and don't overstay their welcome. A Prayer for the Crown-Shy is hopeful, optimistic, and human - it paints a future for humanity that feels a bit unrealistic while also feeling like it's in reach if we just do a little better. And it tries to deal with how to feel valuable and productive in that type of society.
