Annihilation review

April 27, 2025 - Reading time: ~1 minute - Category: reviews

This one wasn't for me. An abrupt ending, very little in the way of explanations, and an increasingly unreliable narrator lead to a novel that, for me, was pretty unsatisfying. I think the setting was very well done, and I was intrigued by the Area X and the expeditions. I understand this is a trilogy, so everything isn't going to be explained in the first book, but it was a little discouraged to have virtually none of this book's mysteries explained to me. It felt like a lot of buildup with no payoff.

I enjoy sci-fi, but this book leans more heavily into "weird lit" that I think I'm still learning to appreciate. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this one enough to continue the series. Maybe I'll try the movie.
