Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) review

July 7, 2025 - Reading time: ~1 minute - Category: reviews

What an absolutely fun, funny, and wildly imaginative movie. Made with stop-motion and weird little animal figures, Fantastic Mr. Fox is an excellent animated film.

The sets are incredible. The artistry on display here, simply from a design point of view, is insane. The story is fun - not especially complicated or hard to follow at all, but interesting and the characters are funny and real and there's some deeper themes and characterization here if you look for it.

Of Wes Anderson's other films, I've only seen Moonrise Kingdom, and this one is just as delightfully weird as that. The voice cast is chock full of talent too, with a special shoutout to Willem Defoe as the Rat.

Weird, for sure, and maybe not for everyone, but this has jumped up my list as one of my favorite animated films ever.
