Perhaps the last major fantasy "legend" I've yet to read is Terry Pratchett. I've read Tolkien, Lewis, Martin, Abercrombie, Moorcock, Vance, and many, many more, but Pratchett's Discworld is one that's always eluded me.
I've always read that Guards! is a great starting place, so that's where I decided to hop in. Unfortunately, while I admire the satire and the humor, I don't think it's for me. I'm really picky with humor in my novels, and the dry, British, trope-deconstructing satire mostly didn't work for me.
I totally get why these books are so beloved, and the characters are really fun, and the city is almost a character in itself. I also see how so many current authors are influenced by Discworld. The style just didn't really resonate with me.
