The Holdovers is a heartwarming movie that does the "found family" trope really well. Paul Giamatti shines as an intelligent, aloof career teacher, and Dominic Sessa plays the role of the depresed intelligent teenager well. Da'Vine Randolph is excellent.
The film takes place in 1970 at an elite boarding school in Massachusetts. All the kids but one (Sessa) go home for the holidays, and Sessa is forced to spend Christmas at school with Hunham (Giamatti) and Mary (Randolph). What starts as a troubled kids rebellion against authority blossoms into a genuine friendship. This movie is a wonderful December watch, and captures the feel of the holidays perfectly, with all of its ups and downs. Giamatti and Sessa nail every scene they're in together.
Excellent filmography as well - this movie really feels like it was shot in the 1970s. This one should be added to anyone's Christmas rotation. I'm really glad I decided to check this one out.
