Your Name. (2016) review

November 23, 2025 - Reading time: ~1 minute - Category: reviews

Your Name. is a beautiful film. It starts off as a sort of Freaky Friday situation where the two main characters, a boy, Taki, from Tokyo, and Mtsuha, a girl from a rural village, wake up on random days having switched bodies. It quickly turns into a deeply emotional look at teenage life and that terrible feeling of a half-remembered dream as the characters try to find each other with the backdrop of an apocalyptic impact event.

Your Name. tells a concise, emotional story across an hour and a half. It's tightly paced and beautifully animated. Every frame of this movie could be a wallpaper. Over the past year I've watched quite a few highly-regarded animated films and this is right up there with the rest of them. It's just a really good story, with themes that I think everyone can relate to. If I watched this when I was 17 instead of 30 I would've been a mess.
