Pokemon Living Dex Challenge Update #1: Kanto

January 20, 2026 - Reading time: 2 minutes - Category: living dex

Over the past view weeks I've been working on my Pokemon Living Dex Challenge, and I'm almost done with Gen 1, probably my second favorite generation. I'm almost finished with FireRed, having beaten the Elite Four and most of the Sevii Islands postgame. The fast-forward feature has been a great help. The only Generation 1-specific Pokemon officially available in FireRed left for me to catch is Mewtwo. Here's a visual view of my progress so far:

I've captured every Pokemon available in the wild in FireRed, save Mewtwo. Through breeding, I was able to get multiple Eevees and another Kabuto for the Eeveelutions and Kabutops. I very briefly started up a few playthroughs of Leafgreen to get the other starter Pokemon, and was able to trade and subsequently breed them with Ditto to get each evolution.

The only Pokemon I'm missing are those exclusive to Leafgreen and the choose-one-of-two-options Pokemon. This leaves me needing:

  • Sandrew and Sandslash
  • Vulpix and Ninetales
  • Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebell
  • Slowpoke and Slowbro
  • Hitmanlee (I chose Hitmonchan in the Dojo)
  • Staryu and Starmie
  • Magmar
  • Pinsir
  • Omanyte and Omastar (I chose Kabuto)

I really don't want to play the same generation again just to mop up the scraps. Luckily, all of these Pokemon are pretty readily available in future games, and while I want to catch them in the game they originally appeared, I don't have infinite time or patience to play the whole game multiple times, especially so close together.

Pokemon Caught: 133/1084 (including region alternate forms)

Total time played: 22 hours

About

My name's Mike, and this is the Lore Depository - my spot online where I can write out my thoughts on games, books, tech, movies, and anything else I find interesting.

My biggest project is my Game Library Project. I have a ton of games collected throughout the years, and have barely played any of them. Check out the linked post to learn more about the project, and click here to be taken to the category page where you can see all my posts for the project.

Another project I'm working on is my Pokemon Living Dex Challenge, where I try to obtain one of each available Pokemon and transfer them into Pokemon Home.

Other content comes mainly in 3 forms:
Reviews, where I post longer-form writeups
