Earlier this year I played through Octopath Traveler 2 and really enjoyed my time with it. I liked the art style, most of the characters, the fast and strategic battle system, and the actions you could take outside of battles to gain items and skills.
There's a new game coming out this year, 0, that serves as a follow-up and a prequel. It's a bit of a mix of the now-defunct gacha game (that I played for about 30 minutes) and a new game. The battle mechanics are the same, but you can apparently have an 8-member party and recruit over 30 party members. There's also a town-building mechanic that's explored in the demo a bit.
I'm a little undecided on this one so far. You can definitely feel a little bit of the gacha bones here. There are resource pods dotted around the map, and the exploration/maps feel a little more simplistic than in the previous game with less branching paths. The town building mechanic seems fine, but I'm worried you'll have to grind resources to make it worthwhile, which will get tedious.
No comment on the story so far, as I didn't really get much into it in the demo. The graphics are still great.
The fact that this one is launching at a lower price point ($50) tells me they know it's a bit less fully-featured than the previous game. It's still on my radar. but I'm definitely waiting for reviews and will likely wait for a sale. I think it's just been too soon since finishing OT2 and I need a break from the mechanics.
